Zohran Mamdani states his intention to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.
"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and the work I do," he said.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he is from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.
With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
