The Latest Casual Game Mode Sparks Heated Discussions Regarding AI Players, XP Rewards, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, the game developers launched a fresh game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but includes a few key adjustments:
- Each team includes only eight human participants, with the remaining filled by AI-controlled opponents.
- Actions done by real players grant complete experience points, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
- Only two maps are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
- Features like Dogtags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
So essentially, the playlist delivers on its name: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think it's a good idea, since it gives additional choices for players seeking different ways to have fun with the game. But, gaming history has shown one thing, it's that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of Battlefield 6 players are upset.
Player Responses: Anger to Support
"Gamers prefer real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your rivals," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking idea," comments another. Meanwhile, in community forums, a player remarks, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," and someone else details everything they consider to be problematic in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
However, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're liking the new mode. "It's very fun to practice, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this game 24/7. Let them find a middle ground," states a different comment. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is great for me," and another praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Concerns and Player Feedback
All that said, there are constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase queue times more extended for other modes because of the sheer number of playlists in the game already. Similarly, certain regions already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, even though it primarily centers on combat against bots.
Lastly, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to offer full XP, including AI matches, but that got canned when they attempted to remove XP farming from the system. Thus this new playlist feels like the player base meeting them in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the devs "making a mistake significantly, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Future Prospects: Will Changes Be Made?
If the development team has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it's that they're listening and acting on player input. Tasks that were overly hard were adjusted rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, if their data shows this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
