The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Detailing His 20 Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a book next month named Diary of a Prisoner, which recounts the period served in jail.

The revelation came just 11 days following Sarkozy was released as his appeal proceeds his conviction related to criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to secure election campaign funds provided by the government of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in a preview, indicating the book will focus on his musings while in isolation instead of wider commentary of the strained and troubled jail system in France.

“Quiet is absent, not present at the prison, where noise is constant sound,” he states. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is strengthened in prison.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, he participated by video link from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, showing great humanity, and who have made this ordeal bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It leaves a mark on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

He, who led the nation for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president of an EU country and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he had said he would use his time for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

It is not certain whether he had time to go through the texts he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work The Count of Monte Cristo, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned later flees to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

The former leader remained secluded for his own security in a space approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at the correctional facility located in the capital. Two bodyguards were stationed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed just yogurt during his stay worried that meals provided may have been contaminated. He had facilities for self-catering yet he declined, according to reports. Not known is if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Lawyer’s Statements

The legal representative, who saw him regularly each day during the incarceration, informed the court security would be better outside jail compared to inside. “There were menacing messages, heard shouts during nighttime and the urgent intervention next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody on 21 October when a Paris court imposed a half-decade term on conspiracy charges over a scheme to obtain political donations for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, with a new trial set for early next year.
