The convicted coup-monger – who has been under residential detention in his residence while a series of court processes and appeals unfold – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the coming days, amidst growing rumors that he will be sent to a notorious high-security facility.
Previous Statements on Inmates
During Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right ex- military man exhibited minimal compassion for the country's inmates.
“What’s the need to give these lowlifes a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, period. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to finish behind bars, you simply need is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”
Incarceration Destination Debate
But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, four of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent attempt to dissuade the supreme court from banishing him there.
The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, said he predicted the elderly figure to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute gut issues – the outcome of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – signified it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His health is very grave. He won’t be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the standard of prison meals.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells holding forty prisoners: “That’s practically one square meter per detainee.
“We talked to the inmates and they protest, naturally, of the horrible food,” continued the senator.

No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. No one desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to receive dignified treatment – but respectful handling while incarcerated. He cannot continue being his personal jailer for his whole life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have long applauding the harsh treatment of inmates, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Only now has the extreme right – which has always asserted that human rights were not for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a penitentiary to find out what conditions are really like,” he remarked.
“He is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning handling”.
Possible Prison Environment
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now houses about fourteen thousand inmates, his more likely destination looks to be a close penitentiary for police officers and other “particular” inmates called Papudinha (Little Papuda).
The accommodations are far more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the spectacular official residence, around 12 miles away.
Based on information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – about the size of vehicle spaces – and contains a 130 square foot bathroom with a water facility and a 12 square meter terrace. “He could be permitted to have a television and even a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report indicated.
