New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
