Far-Right Ex- Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's New Head of State.
After a definitive final ballot, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third presidency, having previously been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Centered On Law and Order and Immigration
Known for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly focused on promises to tackle rising insecurity and radically restrict immigration.
He consistently blamed immigrants, particularly the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the campaign, he issued an stern warning for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.

However, other analysts additionally view it as a part of the established rotation of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Clear Mandate
Despite his sweeping electoral win, Kast will not command an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation might challenge his policy goals, including a promise to cut public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not offered specifics.
"There are many things about how a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not said how he will achieve them," commented a political science expert.
The expert added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts common for the right. But where there is far less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the campaign."
