Christantus Uche Ignites Straightforward Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This occasion provided a platform for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season proved outmatched even for a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
