Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
